By Coco

Window warranty questions should be resolved before ordering, while the specification and responsibilities are still being agreed. A headline number of years does not explain what is covered, who provides the remedy or which costs remain with the buyer. Request the actual warranty documents for the proposed products.

Separate the components and responsible parties

Ask about the frame, finish, insulating glass, hardware and supplied accessories individually. Different components may have different coverage and conditions. Identify whether the contracting supplier administers the claim or directs it to a separate manufacturer.

Installation may be supplied by another party. Clarify how product defects are distinguished from installation issues and who investigates an uncertain cause. Keep the purchase, installation and handover records together so responsibility can be assessed against the actual scope.

Read the coverage and exclusions

Ask what events are covered, when coverage begins and what information must be retained. Discuss finish appearance, glass-seal issues, hardware operation and any exposure-related conditions relevant to the project. Do not assume one warranty statement applies identically to every system or destination.

Check maintenance requirements and whether records are needed. If the building is coastal or difficult to access, establish a realistic maintenance plan before accepting the conditions. Request clarification of ambiguous wording in writing rather than relying on a verbal summary.

Understand the remedy and practical costs

Ask whether a valid claim provides repair, replacement parts, replacement products or another defined remedy. Clarify labour, access equipment, transport, removal and reinstatement costs. A replacement component can still require substantial work to install, especially on an upper floor or a large glazed opening.

Ask how replacement finishes or glass will be matched and whether the exact original product is expected to remain available. Retain material and hardware references so a future service enquiry can identify the component accurately.

Agree the reporting process

  • Contact point and order or product identification.
  • Required photographs and description of the issue.
  • Inspection arrangements and response process.
  • Instructions on preserving damaged items and packaging.
  • Approval needed before third-party repair work.

At handover, collect operating and care instructions and record any outstanding defects. Avoid making an improvised repair that could obscure the cause before the supplier has reviewed the problem. For legal interpretation or disputed rights, obtain advice appropriate to the destination and contract.
