Home     /     Blog     /     Thermal-Break Aluminium Windows: Profiles, Glass and Whole-Window Performance
By Coco

Thermal-break aluminium windows use an insulating separation within the metal profile to reduce a direct heat-conduction path. That feature matters, but it is only part of a complete window. Glass, edge spacers, seals, frame proportions and installation interfaces also deserve attention. Shanghai Slang recommends asking for a defined system and supporting performance information.

Read the profile section

Ask for a section showing how the interior and exterior aluminium parts are separated and connected. Technoform’s insulating-profile overview illustrates the role of insulating profiles in thermally broken aluminium systems. It does not establish a rating for every window using a thermal break.

Confirm the system name and profile references on the quotation. A frame depth or a strip width alone is not a whole-window rating. When alternative profiles are offered, request a revised section and performance comparison rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Coordinate glass and the frame edge

Specify the insulating glass construction, coatings, spacer and glazing details. An upgraded frame with unsuitable glass may not deliver the intended overall result. Likewise, high-performance glass cannot eliminate every thermal path through a poorly coordinated frame or installation junction.

Review mullions, meeting rails and opening sashes as part of the assembly. A large fixed light and a small opening window can have different frame-to-glass proportions. Use the performance information appropriate to the proposed configuration and a consistent assessment method.

Compare the complete window

Ask whether a quoted value represents the frame, centre of glass or whole window. Record the units, standard and reference dimensions. Do not compare unlike values simply because each is called a U-value. If a project requires certified data, verify the model and glazing combination covered by the documentation.

Air and water performance are separate from thermal insulation. Include the relevant project criteria for those characteristics rather than assuming the thermal-break label covers them. Hardware, drainage and assembly quality remain important to everyday operation.

Review the building connection

The perimeter detail should show how the frame connects to the wall’s insulation, air seal and weather protection. Have the project designer resolve those interfaces, including anchors and internal finishes. Filling an installation gap without a coordinated detail is not a substitute for design.

  • Record system and profile references.
  • Approve glass, spacer and coating details.
  • Compare whole-window evidence on the same basis.
  • Show the perimeter connection in section.
  • Retain the approved configuration for maintenance.

Browse Shanghai Slang casement windows and tilt-and-turn windows within the window category. Ask which system can meet the project specification rather than selecting by the thermal-break description alone.
