By Coco

Reviewing shop drawings for windows and doors is the point where design intent becomes manufacturing information. A drawing should do more than repeat the quotation title. It should show the exact configuration, dimensions and interfaces that the supplier intends to produce. Review it systematically against the current opening schedule and site information.

Establish the correct drawing revision

Check the project name, item identifiers, revision and issue date. Confirm that the supplier used the latest architectural information and survey. If an opening changed after the original quotation, make sure the change appears in the drawing rather than assuming it was included.

Keep a review log with clear comments and responsibilities. Distinguish approved items from items waiting for clarification. A general email saying looks good can leave unresolved dimensions or hardware choices hidden in the attachment.

Check geometry and operation first

Compare outer-frame dimensions with the agreed opening reference and installation detail. Verify quantities, panel divisions, sill heights and any required clear opening. Review the frame depth in relation to wall finishes, not only the front elevation.

Confirm viewing direction, hinge side, inward or outward swing, sliding travel and bifold stack position. Mark the active leaf on paired doors. Check the open positions against screens, blinds, handles, walls and furniture shown on the project plan.

Verify the specification and interfaces

Read the glass build-up, frame-system reference, finish and hardware notes. A short description such as double glazing is incomplete if the order depends on particular coatings, safety treatments or acoustic properties. Match performance-document references to the proposed configuration.

Review head, sill and jamb sections, anchors and perimeter sealing. Identify the actual substrate and the responsibilities for waterproofing, flashing and making good. Ask the designer to resolve structural or code questions; a buyer’s visual review is not a replacement for that professional assessment.

Close comments before production release

  • Require revised drawings for accepted changes.
  • Check that every review comment has a response.
  • Record approved samples and finish references.
  • Identify remaining qualifications explicitly.
  • Archive the final manufacturing revision with the order.

If a supplier proposes a substitution after approval, ask for the affected drawing and specification to be reissued. This prevents the approved record from describing one assembly while production follows another. Agree who can authorize changes and how they are communicated.

Shanghai Slang windows and doors, including casement windows and sliding doors, can be referenced in the initial enquiry. The approved shop drawings should then define the actual custom order, its interfaces and the revision released for manufacture.
