By Coco

Coastal window corrosion is a specification and maintenance issue, not simply a choice of frame colour. Salt exposure, sheltered deposits, hardware materials and finish damage can affect service conditions. Begin by describing the actual site and asking for a finish and maintenance proposal suited to that environment.

Describe exposure accurately

Give the supplier the project location, proximity to the sea and the position of each facade. A sheltered opening can retain deposits differently from a surface regularly washed by rain. Include industrial pollution or other unusual exposure instead of describing every site as ordinary residential use.

AkzoNobel’s corrosion report identifies salt spray and humidity as relevant challenges for coastal facades and window frames. That context supports asking for a defined coating system, but does not prove that every powder-coated product is suitable for every coastal location.

Specify finish and hardware together

Record the coating or anodizing reference, pretreatment requirements where relevant, colour, texture and approved applicator information if required by the specification. A colour code alone does not identify the complete protective finish system.

Review hinges, screws, rollers, locks and other exposed components. Ask the system supplier to confirm material compatibility and the treatment of connections between different metals. Avoid replacing a fastener with an unapproved alternative during installation. Finish repair procedures should be agreed before site damage occurs.

Build a realistic cleaning plan

Request written cleaning instructions and an interval appropriate to the actual exposure. Interpon’s architectural-component cleaning guidance provides a primary reference for its coating products. Follow the instructions for the finish actually supplied rather than applying a generic chemical or abrasive treatment.

Keep tracks and drainage paths accessible and clear. Record cleaning and inspections where required by the warranty. A maintenance plan that needs unsafe access to upper-floor exterior surfaces should be resolved during design, not after the windows are installed.

Inspect and retain records

  • Check finish damage, deposits and exposed connections.
  • Record hardware operation and signs of deterioration.
  • Photograph changes and identify the affected opening.
  • Contact the supplier before applying an improvised repair.
  • Keep finish references and maintenance instructions.

Coastal exposure and impact protection are separate specification questions. A product described as impact resistant still needs an appropriate finish, hardware and cleaning plan.

Review Shanghai Slang impact windows, including awning and sliding options. Send the exposure description with the opening schedule and ask the supplier to state finish, hardware and maintenance assumptions clearly.
