Home     /     Blog     /     Estimating Landed Cost for Imported Windows Without Relying on Unit Price Alone
By Coco

An import windows landed cost estimate should show how goods reach the agreed destination, not just the supplier’s unit price. It combines a defined product quotation with transport, destination and import-related inputs. Keep estimates, confirmed charges and unresolved items separate so the budget remains understandable.

Choose a consistent cost boundary

State whether the budget ends at the destination port, a warehouse or the project site. Installation and making good may sit outside landed cost, but the overall project comparison should still show them separately. Otherwise a delivered product can appear ready for use while significant work remains unbudgeted.

Record the currency, quotation date and exchange-rate assumption. Use the same quantities and specification when comparing suppliers. An attractive factory price for a different glazing or hardware package is not a saving on the same order.

Build the transport and destination lines

Ask the forwarder for origin handling, main carriage, destination charges, clearance services, local delivery and any special unloading requirements relevant to the route. Identify which costs are already included under the agreed sale terms to avoid counting them twice.

ICC’s Incoterms 2020 guidance helps explain the allocation of costs and responsibilities. The named place and actual contract still need to be clear. Do not assume a short trade-term abbreviation answers every logistics question.

Obtain current import inputs

Have the importer or qualified broker confirm classification, valuation and applicable destination charges for the actual goods and origin. Rates and measures can change, so do not apply a generic percentage from an old window order. Use current written inputs with an identified source and date.

For U.S. shipments, CBP’s tips for new importers and exporters explains that using a broker does not remove the importer’s responsibility for entry information and applicable charges. Other destinations have their own processes. This budget worksheet should support professional verification, not replace it.

Keep uncertainty visible

  • Product and packing subtotal.
  • Freight and insurance where applicable.
  • Confirmed import and destination charges.
  • Local delivery, unloading and storage.
  • Separately identified installation and site work.
  • Unconfirmed items with an owner and review date.

Update the estimate when packed dimensions, shipment timing or the destination changes. Keep a record of what is included and avoid presenting a preliminary total as a guaranteed final amount.
