By Coco

Window handing direction is easy to misunderstand when a buyer and supplier view the same opening from opposite sides. Left-hand and right-hand conventions can vary by market and product system. The most reliable ordering method combines plain-language labels with a drawing showing the viewing side, hinge position and movement.

Define the viewing direction

Label the interior and exterior on every elevation or plan. State whether the elevation is viewed from outside or inside. The hinge that appears on the left from the room appears on the right from outdoors, so an unexplained left-opening note is not sufficient.

Keep the same convention throughout the schedule and shop drawings. If the supplier uses a different convention, resolve the difference explicitly and retain the agreed drawing. Do not expect a product name or a photograph to communicate a project-specific orientation.

Show the movement of every panel

For hinged doors and casement windows, mark the hinge edge and draw the opening direction. A plan view helps explain inward or outward movement and any nearby obstruction. Identify the intended opening angle and stop position where these affect the layout.

For sliding systems, show fixed and moving panels and arrows indicating travel. Describe the final open position, not only the closed elevation. For bifold systems, mark the first operating panel, folding sequence and stack location. These details are more precise than a single handing abbreviation.

Identify active leaves and hardware

A paired door may have one everyday active leaf and a secondary leaf with separate bolts or locks. State which leaf is active from the agreed viewing side. Include handle location, external access and any access-control requirements.

Check that screens, blinds and adjacent fittings remain compatible with the operation. A door may be correctly handed according to a convention yet still conflict with furniture or a wall. Reviewing the open position against the finished plan catches that problem before manufacture.

Use a final approval check

  • Confirm opening ID and room location.
  • Label interior, exterior and elevation viewing side.
  • Mark hinges, fixed panels and travel arrows.
  • Identify the active leaf, handles and stack position.
  • Compare the drawing with site access and obstructions.

Keep marked approvals with the order. If the layout changes, issue a revised drawing rather than a short message saying reverse it. The phrase reverse can refer to hinge side, swing direction or both, and is a common source of ambiguity.
