Impact glass vs tempered glass compares terms that describe different things. Tempered describes a glass treatment. Impact glass is a market phrase that needs a defined performance context and supporting documents. A pane can be tempered without forming an impact-resistant window, and an impact glazing build-up may incorporate more than one glass treatment.
Tempering changes the glass, not the entire window
Tempering uses a controlled heating and cooling process to introduce stresses into the glass. Pilkington’s technical explanation of toughened glass describes its treatment and small-fragment breakage behaviour. This is different from demonstrating that a complete installed window can resist a specified windborne-debris test.
Do not use the word tempered as shorthand for hurricane protection. Ask which requirement the proposed glazing is intended to satisfy and what evidence supports that claim. Keep human-impact safety, structural loading and debris-impact performance as separate questions in the specification.
Ask what the proposed build-up contains
A glazing description should list each pane, its treatment, any interlayer, cavity, coating and overall construction. Laminated glass bonds glass plies with an interlayer; it is not simply another name for tempered glass. An insulating glass unit may contain a laminated pane, a tempered pane or another specified combination.
Request the complete build-up in writing. Avoid descriptions such as heavy-duty glass or hurricane glass without a reference. The supplier should connect the build-up to the intended system and documentation, rather than asking the buyer to infer suitability from overall thickness.
Check assembly scope and traceability
For impact-related applications, the frame, glass retention, hardware, anchors and substrate form part of the decision. A glass report is not automatically evidence for every window into which the glass might be fitted. Match the exact model, operation, dimensions and installation conditions.
Record the document reference against each item in the opening schedule. If glass or hardware changes after drawing approval, ask whether the documented scope still applies. Retain labels and supply records so delivered products can be traced to the approved specification.
A useful enquiry checklist
- What performance is required at this project location?
- What is the complete glass construction?
- Which tests or approvals cover the proposed assembly?
- Are the ordered dimensions and installation conditions covered?
- How are delivered units identified and inspected?
Shanghai Slang’s impact window category and pages for impact sliding windows and impact fixed windows are starting points for discussing configurations. Supply the project criteria and request model-specific evidence before treating any glazing term as proof of suitability. The decisive information is the documented assembly, not the promotional name of the glass.
