Home     /     Blog     /     French vs Sliding Patio Doors: Space and Threshold Planning
By Coco

French vs sliding doors often starts as a visual preference, but the floor plan usually provides the stronger answer. French doors use hinged leaves, commonly arranged as a pair. Sliding patio doors move parallel to the facade. Compare the usable passage and the space required for operation before choosing the frame colour or handle style.

Reserve the operating space

Hinged French doors require a swing zone. Mark the full arc on the indoor and outdoor plans according to the proposed opening direction. Check dining furniture, curtains, plants and the route to the patio. A door that can open fully only after moving a chair will be less convenient in daily use.

A sliding door avoids that swing zone but retains overlapping panels within a conventional frame. Ask how many panels move and what width remains clear. For either arrangement, frame width is different from clear passage. Request the actual opening dimensions on the proposed elevation.

Choose the everyday access leaf

A French-door pair normally has an active leaf used for regular entry and a secondary leaf secured separately. Confirm the latch, flush bolts or other locking arrangement and how the second leaf opens. Make sure the everyday passage is sufficient without releasing both leaves.

For a slider, confirm the direction of travel and where handles sit when panels overlap. Test operation with representative panel weight. If a lockable outside handle is needed, specify it explicitly; not every patio-door configuration provides the same external access.

Understand meeting stiles and screens

The centre junction affects sightlines and operation. Ask whether the French-door system has a permanent centre mullion or another meeting arrangement. For sliders, compare interlock profiles and the number of tracks. Use section drawings to assess the view rather than assuming all frames have similar proportions.

Screen design should be coordinated early. A hinged screen, sliding screen or retractable cassette each needs parking space and handle access. Show where it sits relative to the doors, wall and floor. Avoid discovering after installation that the preferred screen conflicts with the active leaf.

Approve the threshold in section

Interior floor level, exterior paving, drainage and waterproofing must be considered together. A low threshold may help access, but the exact detail still needs to suit the exposure and the project’s requirements. Ask which sill option is included in the price and in any performance documentation.

Compare the proposals with equivalent glass, finish, hardware and installation scope. Include screen costs, commissioning and maintenance instructions. More convenient daily operation can matter more than achieving the largest opening on occasional gatherings.
